Quakes and JetHawks Split Series

After winning the first two games of this four game series, the Quakes took the loss in the final two, game four being a blow out that included the use of two position players as pitchers. The JetHawks managed to score 30 runs, 17 in the final game, while the Quakes managed to score 23, 12 of them in game one. The JetHawks outhit the Quakes by just 5 hits, 40 for them and 35 for Rancho, with each team having 138 at bats. 

 

Lancaster's Batting

Shortstop, Nolan Fontana went 7-19 with 3 doubles. Center fielder, Andrew Aplin went 6-15 with a double and a grand slam. Left fielder/designated hitter/first baseman, MP Cokinos went 5-14 with 2 doubles. Designated hitter/second baseman, Joe Sclafani went 1-8 with a home run. Third baseman/first baseman, Matt Duffy went 4-16 with 2 doubles. Right fielder, Chris Epps went 5-15 with a double, a triple, and 2 home runs. Left fielder, Brandon Meredith went 4-11 with a double and a home run. 

Rancho's Batting

Dodgers's utility man, Scott Van Slyke went 2-3, as the designated hitter, with 2 base hits in his final rehab game (game 1 of the series) before returning to the Dodgers. Shortstop, Darnell Sweeney went 5-17 with 2 doubles and a home run. Left fielder/right fielder, Scott Schebler went 7-16 with 2 doubles,  a home run, and a walk-off grand slam. Catcher, Webster Rivas went 1-12 with a double. Second baseman/pitcher, Scott Wingo went 2-11 with a double. Dodgers's outfielder, Carl Crawford, went 2-3 in his first rehab game (game 4 of the series) with 2 base hits.

JetHawks's Pitching

Cameron Lamb went 2 innings of 1 hit baseball in game 1. Starter, David Rollins went 5 innings of 2 hit baseball, not able to go any more as part of the tandem pitching system used by the JetHawks. Travis Ballew earned the game 3 save after going an inning while allowing 1 hit. Blair Walters earned the game 3 win after going 1 inning and allowing 1 run on 3 hits. Jonas Dufek allowed 1 hit in 2 innings pitched in game 3. Starter, Aaron West earned the game 4 win after going the maximum 5 innings and allowing 2 runs, 1 earned, on 6 hits. Thomas Shirley got the game 4 save after going 4 innings and allowing just 1 run on 1 hit. 

Quakes's Pitching 

Carlos Frias earned the game 1 win after going 6 innings and allowing 2 runs, 1 earned, on 5 hits. Eric Eadington earned the game 2 win after going 1 inning and allowing 1 hit. Jon Michael Redding did quite well in his second start of the season, going 4 strong innings and only allowing 3 hits. Utility infielder, Pedro Guerrero pitched in game 4. He went .2 innings and allowed 6 runs on 3 hits. Second baseman, Scott Wingo also pitched in game 4, going 1.1 innings and allowing 1 run on 2 hits and striking out 1.

Roster Moves 

Outfielder, Blake Smith has been sent back to the Quakes from AA, but not as an outfielder as he was for Rancho in 2011. He will be switching to pitching. Outfielder, Jon Garcia has been promoted to AA. Ted Lilly came to Rancho for a rehab assignment. Carl Crawford also visited for a rehab assignment that will consist of 4 games total. Pitcher, Pedro Baez was placed on the DL and pitcher, Lindsey Caughel was activated from it as well as outfielder Devin Shines and catcher, Pratt Maynard. Pitcher, James Campbell has been sent to the Arizona League team for a rehab assignment for his knee. Pitcher Matt Shelton and Catcher John Cannon have both been sent to Ogden to make room on the roster. 

Upcoming Games

The Quakes will play 3 (7/1-7/3) against the 66ers in Rancho. Monday is Social Media Monday, Tuesday is Recycle Tuesday, and Wednesday is a pre 4th of July fireworks show as the Quakes will not be home on the 4th. The stadium will however be in use on the 4th for a Fireworks Spectacular put on by the city. The Quakes will be playing the Mavericks in Adelanto, CA, July 4-6.

Quakes Swept by 66ers

This article is a day late. Sorry for any confusion. I was traveling and couldn't fit this in.

The Quakes were swept by the Inland Empire 66ers in a three game series in San Bernardino this week. They have yet to win a game in the second half of the 2013 season as they were also swept by the JetHawks in the first series of the second half. The 66ers managd to outhit the Quakes, 26-20, as well as out score them, 14-7. 

Quakes Batting

Left fielder/right fielder, Scott Schebler went 4-11 with a double. Shortstop, Darnell Sweeney went 2-12 with a double. Right fielder/center fielder/Quakes home run leader, Jonathan Garcia went 2-11 with his 17th long ball of the year. Dodgers utility man, Scott Van Slyke went 1-4 with a single to start off his rehab assignment with the Quakes.

Outfielder, Brennan Gowens went 2-10 with a triple. Second baseman, Alex Yarbrough went 5-11 with a double. First baseman, Michael Snyder went 4-13 with a double and a home run. Rancho's Pitching

Relief pitcher, Raydel Sanchez threw 2.2 scoreless innings in game 1 while giving up only 2 hits. Pedro Baez went 1.2 innings in game 2 and gave up 1 unearned run on 2 hits. Bullpen newcomer, Jarret Martin threw a hitless inning in game 2. Angel Sanchez went 3+ innings in relief in game 3 and allowed 2 runs, 1 earned, on 2 hits with 6 strikeouts. Matt Shelton went 1.1 innings and allowed just 1 hit in game 3.

Inland Empire's Pitching 

Eric Cendejas earned the game 1 win after throwing 2 hitless innings. He earned the game 3 win after going 1 inning and allowing 1 run on one hit. Mike Morin earned the save in game 1 after pitching a hitless inning. He also earned the game 2 save after going .2 innings without allowing a hit. Starter, Orangel Arenas earned the game 2 win after going 7 strong innings and only giving up one run on 4 hits. Eduard Santos went 1.1 innings while allowing only 1 hit. Ty Kelley pitched 2 scoreless innings and gave up 2 hits. R.J. Alvarez gave up 1 hit in 2 innings pitched.

Roster Moves

LHP, Jarret Martin has been moved to the bullpen. RHP, Angel Sanchez has been added to the roster from the Great Lake Loons.  Dodgers outfielder, Scott Van Slyke has been added to the roster to finish up a rehab assignment for neck and shoulder pain. RHP, Lindsey Caughel was placed on the DL because of a blister on his foot. RHP, Jon Michael Redding will be starting for Caughel.

JetHawks Sweep Quakes to Start 2nd Half

The entire California League had a three day break for the California/Carolina League All-Star break last week. The best players from each league found themselves in San Jose, California, as they were chosen to play at Municipal Stadium, the home of the San Jose Giants. The Cal League took the loss this time around and just as quickly as it seemed to come this season, the all-star break ended and the second half of the 2013 season began. 

The Quakes and JetHawks started up the second half at Clear Channel Stadium in Lancaster, California. The series didn't exactly go the Quakes's way however. The JetHawks managed to out hit the Quakes 42-28 and out score them 41-11. The JetHawks starting pitching was superb for the first 3 games of the 4 game series.

Shortstop, Darnell Sweeney went 6-17 with a triple. Left fielder/right fielder, Scott Schebler continued his hot hitting by going 5-17 with a double and a home run, Designated hitter/first baseman, O'Koyea Dickson went 3-15 with a double and a home run. Starter, David Rollins went 5 strong innings while allowing just 1 hit in game 1 to earn the win. Piggy back starter, Tyson Perez earned the save in game 1 after going 4 innings and allowing 3 runs on 5 hits. Starter, Luis Cruz earned the game 2 win after going 5 innings and allowing just 2 hits. Kyle Hallock went 3 innings in game 2 and allowed 2 hits. Michael Dimock went 1 hitless inning in game 2. Starter, Aaron West earned the game 3 win after going 5 innings and allowing 2 hits. Ports Take 3 of 4 in First Half Finale

In the final series of the first half of the 2013 California League season, the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes took on the Stockton Ports for the final time, at least in Rancho anyway. The Ports took 2 of 3 from the Quakes the last time they played, which was up in Stockton at Banner Island Ballpark. This time around, the Ports managed to pull off the same thing, just with an extra game tossed in the mix. The Quakes managed to out hit the Ports 44-43, as well as outscore them 27-23, even though they took the series loss.

Center fielder/right fielder Myrio Richard went 3-18 with 2 doubles. Shortstop, Addison Russell went 7-15 with 2 doubles, a triple, and a home run. Jonathan Joseph earned the game 3 after throwing a hit less inning. He also pitched a score less inning in game 4. Storm Sweep Quakes in Final Meeting in 1st Half

The Quakes and the Lake Elsinore Storm met up for their final series in the first half of the California League 2013 season. The Quakes were swept in Lake Elsinore as there seemed to be a lack of hitting early in the games. The Quakes managed to get there bats going in the later innings, but unfortunately couldn't rally back in time. They were out hit 33-22 and out scored 23-10. The Quakes do have a season series advantage over the Storm though with a record of 10-7.

Center fielder/left fielder, Noel Cuevas went 3-12 with a double and a triple. First baseman, O'Koyea Dickson went 4-12 with 2 doubles. Dodgers catcher, A.J. Ellis is currently on the roster doing rehab work for a strained oblique. He might continue his rehab assignment Thursday night at LoanMart Field.

3B, Bladimir Franco has been promoted to the Quakes to replace Guerrero and fill in for injured 3B, Ryan Mount.

Quakes and Rawhide Split Series

The Quakes and the Rawhide went at it again in a 4 game series this weekend in Visalia, California at Recreation Ballpark. The first time the two teams faced each other was back in May at LoanMart Field where the Rawhide took the first two games and the Quakes took the final two. The same thing happened in this series. The Quakes couldn't get their bats going in game one, where they only managed to record 1 run and two hits, or game two, where they scored no runs, but managed to get 4 hits. They did however manage to get a combined total of 30 hits over the last two games. The Quakes out hit the Rawhide 36-30 and also out scored them 23-15. In the final game of the series, the Quakes managed to get 20 hits and score 17 runs, both records for this season.

Both teams pitching staffs were certainly kept busy as the Quakes used 13 pitchers and the Rawhide used 12. The first game was a pitchers duel, but the final three required a little more work.

Rancho's Pitching 

Both Matt Shelton and Joel Lima pitched in games 2 and 4. Shelton went 2 innings total and did not allow a run or hit. Lima also went 2 innings without allowing a run, but he did allow 1 hit. Raydel Sanchez and Daniel Coulombe both pitched in game 3. Sanche went N inning and allowed a hit. Coulombe went .2 innings and also allowed a hit. Jon Michael Redding earned the game 3 win after going 1.1 innings and allowing just 1 hit. Eric Eadington earned the game 3 save after going 1 inning and allowing 1 hit. Starter, Jarret Martin earned the game 4 win after going 5 innings and giving up 4 runs on 6 hits. Freddie Cabrera made an appearance in game 4, going 1 inning and allowing 1 unearned run on 1 hit.

Visalia's Pitching 

Seth Simmons earned the win in game 1 after going 1 inning and allowing a hit. He also appeared in game 3 and went 2 innings without giving up a hit. Kaleb Fleck earned the game 1 save after going an inning without giving up a hit. He also pitched in game tree, going 1 inning and allowing 1 run on 3 hits. 

Cody Wheeler earned the game 2 win after going 6 innings and allowing just 2 hits. Matt Sample went an inning in game 2 and did not allow a run or a hit. Patrick Schuster and Jake Barrett both pitched in game 4. Schuster went 2 innings and gave up a hit and Barrett went 1 inning while also allowing a hit.

RHP Duke von Schamann was sent to the AA Chattanooga Lookouts. James Campbell will be taking his spot in the starting rotation. 

RHP Matt Shelton has been added to the roster from Extended Spring Training.

Catcher Chris O'Brien has been placed on the disabled list after taking a foul tip off of his right hand, which fractured his finger. Webster Rivas has been sent to the Quakes from Extended Spring Training to fill in for him.

The Quakes and the Blaze met for the first time this year in a four game series that took place at Sam Lynn Ballpark in Bakersfield, CA. The Quakes took game 1 and game 4 of the series while the Blaze took games 2 and 3. The Quakes managed to out hit the Blaze, 41-39, but the Blaze outscored the Quakes, 28-27.

This series definitely consisted of some interesting things. The first thing of course being the rehab appearance by Dodgers shortstop, Hanley Ramirez. Two new players were added to the Quakes roster, pitcher, Joel Lima and outfielder, Devin Shines. Lima made two outings in this series and Shines has yet to make an appearance. Utility infielder, Pedro Guerrero was activated from the disabled list and played in the final game of the series. Third baseman, Ryan Mount played in two games and was then placed on the disabled list with a foot injury, which also caused him to miss four games earlier this season. Center fielder, Noel Cuevas started in game 1 of the series, but was removed after being hit in the hand by a pitch. He hasn't appeared in a game since. Last but not least, pitcher, Ryan Acosta received a 50 game suspension and was released to make room for Joel Lima.

Rancho's Batting

Hanley Ramirez played at short in game 2 of the series and he was the DH in game 3. Overall, he went 1-6 with a base hit. Shortstop, Darnell Sweeney went 6-18 with a double. Third baseman, Ryan Mount went 4-10 with 2 doubles. First baseman/third baseman/designated hitter, O'Koyea Dickson went 6-17 with 2 doubles and a home run. Center fielder/right fielder, Jon Garcia went 4-11 with a double and two home runs, which gives him the team lead at 11 home runs. Catcher, Pratt Maynard went 1-6 with his second home run of the year. Left fielder/right fielder, Scott Schebler went 6-16 with 2 doubles and a home run. Second baseman, Scott Wingo went 2-6 with a double. Center fielder/second baseman, Casio Grider went 2-10 with a double.

Bakersfield's Batting

Designated hitter, Ryan Wright went 6-18 with a double. Center fielder, Yorman Rodriguez went 6-15 with 2 doubles and 2 home runs. Second baseman/third baseman, Marquez Smith went 5-15 with a double. Left fielder/first baseman, Steve Selsky went home run crazy on the Quakes, going 4-10 with three home runs, 2 in game 3 and 1 in game 4. Right fielder, Juan Duran (1 of 4 Juan's on the team) went 3-15 with a double and a triple. Third baseman/second baseman, Juan Silverio went 1-16 with a double. First baseman, Dominic D'Anna went 2-8 with a double. Catcher, Yovan Gonzalez went 4-7 with a double. Shortstop, Juan Perez went 3-15 with a home run. Catcher, Nick O'Shea went 2-6 with a double.

Quake's Pitching

Starter and Bakersfield native, Jarret Martin earned the game 1 win after going 6 innings and allowing 2 runs on 4 hits. Relief pitcher, Jon Michael Redding went 3 innings total over two games and allowed 1 unearned run on 2 hits. Relief pitcher, Daniel Coulombe went an inning without giving up a hit in game 2. James Campbell went an inning in game 3 and gave up 1 hit. Pedro Baez went 1 inning in game 3 and gave up 1 hit and 1 unearned run. Starter, Garrett Gould earned the game 4 win after going 7 innings and allowing 3 runs on 5 hits.

Blaze's Pitching

Relief pitcher, El'Hajj Muhammad went 1.1 innings over 2 games and allowed 1 hit. Starter, Carlos Contreras earned the game 2 win after going 5 innings and allowing 3 runs on 4 hits. Jamie Walczak went 1.2 innings over two games and allowed no hits or runs. Relief pitcher, Brooks Pinckard got the win in game 3 after going 3 innings while allowing just  hit.

The Quakes return home on Monday (6/3) and will play the Inland Empire 66ers, the affiliate of the Angels, at LoanMart Field. Hanley Ramirez (hamstring) is scheduled to play for the Quakes Monday night and Peter Bourjos (hamstring) is scheduled to play for the 66ers on Monday night as well. Monday is Social Media Monday, Tuesday is Recycle Tuesday, and Wednesday is the 2nd of 4 Bark in the Park nights.

JetHawks Soar Past the Rawhide

In 2012 I decided to make it a goal of mine to visit all of the stadiums in the California League North and South. I've been to the Quakes home field hundreds of times, since I was a month old, in 1995 to be exact. I've been to Inland Empire's field at least 3 times, Lake Elsinore 3 times, and High Desert once. I've even been to the Bakersfield stadium 2 times and the Visalia Rawhide once. So far that's 4 of 5 teams in the South and 2 of 5 in the North. Now to get to the point. Last night, June 1st, I was finally able to say that I've completed half of my original goal. I got to see my first JetHawks game at The Hangar. So for the South, it's 5 down and none to go! 

What a great game my first game was. The JetHawks were down 2-0, but ended up winning it 12-3. Not only did I get to see 3 home runs, but I also got to see a hit streak continue on for Lancaster's right fielder, Preston Tucker.

Aside from a light curtain of ash falling from a nearby fire, I found The Hangar, or Clear Channel Stadium, to be quite an amazing place to watch America's Pastime. My seat was in the first row, right behind the JetHawks dugout, which gave me a good view of the field and Rawhide dugout. The field itself gave off a taste of the old and new with both an electronic scoreboard and a manual scoreboard. The music that was played between innings and pitching changes was in good taste and variety, so I often found myself singing along. The employees were courteous and well informed and the players themselves seemed to be having fun as well, or so I judged after viewing some dancing in the dugout. I found the locations of the clubhouses to be very interesting as they reside in foul territory in left and right field respectively. I'm accustomed to them being located underneath the seats of the stadium, but what's wrong with a little change every now and then, right?

Now back to the game. As I said earlier, the Rawhide got off to a good start against the JetHawks after scoring 2 runs in the top of the first, but the 'Hawks took those runs back in the bottom half of the inning. The Rawhide stole back another run in the top of the 2nd, but would not score another run for the rest of the night. The JetHawks, on the other hand, went on to score 3 in the 4th, 5 in the 5th, and 2 in the 8th. I was looking forward to seeing the entire JetHawk team, but I was watching certain members of the team very closely, although the entire roster is loaded with talent. One player in particular was the second baseman, Delino DeShields. He ended up going 2-5 with two singles and scoring 2 runs. I was also looking forward to seeing Pretson Tucker, who certainly produced what was promised. He went 2-4 with a walk, a double, and the first home run of the night for the JetHawks. Left fielder, Brandon Meredith went 3-5 with 2 singles and a double. Designsted hitter, Chris Epps went 1-3 with a walk and the 2nd home run for the JetHawks. Shortstop, Joe Sclafani went 2-3 with 2 walks, a single and the third home run of the night for the JetHawks. First baseman, Telvin Nash went 2-5 with a single and a double. Relief pitcher Michael Dimock impressed in his 1.1 innings, allowing no runs or hits and striking out 2. Piggy back starter, Brady Rodgers ended up earning the win after going 4 scoreless innings and allowing just 2 hits while striking out 3.

The Rawhide had a few stand out players last night, so I'll start with their second baseman, Gerson 

Montilla, who went 2-5 with a double and a bunt single. Right fielder, Tom Belza went 3-4 with 3 base hits. Center fielder, Evan Marzilli went 2-4 with a bunt single and a double.
