Quakes Walk-off to win 7th Straight Series!

The Quakes and the JetHawks played each other for the 5th time this year, the third in the second half, and the third time at LoanMart Field. I personally knew this was going to be a good series just by looking at how the JetHawks always seem to play, and how the Quakes have been playing lately. I also looked at what the teams had been able to do against each other earlier this season. The record now looks a little something like this: Series 1- RC Win, Series 2- LAN Sweep, Series 3- LAN Sweep, Series 4- RC/LAN Split, Series 5- RC Win. Rancho now has 6 wins over Lancaster, while Lancaster has 11 wins over Rancho.
Games 1 and 3 were certainly nail bitters, with the first going into extra innings, the 3rd time in 4 games (the other 2 against the 66ers), I might add, and the 3rd game being won with 2 strikes and 2 outs. In game 1, with two outs and runners on 1st and 3rd and the Quakes down by 1 in the bottom of the 10th, a strikeout from JetHawks pitcher, Kenny Long, ended the game. Talk about a close one. Game 3 was bound to have a similar end, or so we thought. With runners on 1st and 3rd, the Quakes found themselves down to their final strike, on the bad end of a score of 10-9, in the bottom of the 9th. Pedro Guerrero was at the plate and he did what we were all collectively holding our breaths for, a walk-off. A single was all it took to bring in pinch runner, Scott Wingo from 3rd and the speedy Casio Grider in from 1st.
The Quakes outscored the JetHawks, 19-17 and out hit them, 31-30.

Lancaster's Batting

Designated hitter/second baseman, Delino DeShields went 7-13 with 2 doubles, a triple, and a home run. DeShields was on cycle watch Sunday night, needing a double to come around full circle with one of the toughest feats in baseball, or at least it is in my head anyway. First baseman/third baseman, Matt Duffy went 3-11with a home run. Center fielder, Andrew Aplin went 2-13 with a double. Second baseman/shortstop/designated hitter, Joe Sclafani went 3-13 with 2 doubles and a triple. Third baseman, Carlos Perdomo went 1-7 with a double. Right fielder, Chris Epps went 6-11 with a home run. Catcher, Ryan McCurdy went 2-7 with a double. Designated hitter/first baseman, M.P. Cokinos went 2-10 with a triple.

Rancho's Batting

Outfielder, Noel Cuevas went 4-12 with a home run. Shortstop, Darnell Sweeney went 2-13 with a double. Designated hitter/first baseman, O'Koyea Dickson went 2-13 with a double. Game 1 winner, Blair Walters pitched 2.2 innings without allowing a hit in game 1, as well as another hit less inning in game 3. Travis Ballew didn't allow a hit over .2 innings in game 1. Kenny Long earned the game 1 save after going .1 innings without allowing a hit. Cameron Lamb allowed 1 hit in 1 inning in game 2.

Quakes's Pitching

Dan Coulombe did not allow a hit over 1.1 innings in game 1. Jarret Martin also did not allow a hit over 1 inning in game 1. He got the game 3 win after allowing 1 run on 3 hits over 1.2 innings. Matt Shelton earned the game 2 win after going 2.1 innings without allowing a hit. Eric Eadington earned the game 2 save after going 1.1 innings and giving up a hit.

The Quakes play the 66ers in Inland Empire for a 3 game series (7/30-8/1) before heading up to Visalia to play the Rawhide for a 3 game series (8/2-8/4).

Quakes Beat 66ers to Take 6th Straight Series

The Quakes and 66ers, who seem to have the biggest rivalry in the Cal League, duked it out to start the beginning of a 6 game home stand. The tension in game 1 was clearly visible. Quakes hitting coach, Johnny Washington was ejected fairly quickly after attempting to defend his team, who was being told to "Shut up" by the 66ers manager. I was sitting and watching the game with my family, a rarity for me, since I'm usually taking tickets at the main entrance... I was certainly confused as to what exactly was going on. I saw Johnny later on, in the stands, during the remainder of the game, so i asked him what happened, but more about that later. After a few more innings, the 66ers tried the old hidden ball trick. Unfortunately, for the Quakes, it worked. Carlos Subero, the manager of the Quakes, didn't like the call, nor did the base runner, Pratt Maynard. Throughout the rest of the game, both managers continually questioned what the umpire had to say. I personally was a little surprised no one else was tossed. Now back to Johnny. He said he was just standing up for the team and he would do it again the next night if he had to. 'Good for him,' I found myself thinking as I walked away. I hadn't ever really known a coach or manager that was that willing to sacrifice his night on the field to defend his players. He ended up with a suspension the next day for it, but I'm sure he'd be willing to do it again in a heartbeat to make sure no other coach or player from an opposing team would pick on the members of the Quakes.
I mentioned the tension between the teams earlier, right? Well, I'll mention it again now. The first night, you could've cut the tension with a knife and that was before the game went into extra innings, as did the second game. Luckily the third game ended without the need for "free" baseball. I think the extra innings only added more tension to the rivalry of the two teams. To summarize, the 66ers won game 1 in 11 innings, the Quakes walked off in the 10th in game 2, and the Quakes managed to hold a tight lead in game 3 to take the series. The 66ers out scored the Quakes 17-16, as well as out hit the Quakes, 32-28.

Matt Shelton threw 2 innings without giving up a hit in game 1. Jarret Martin allowed 1 hit over 1.2 innings in game 2. Game 2 winner, Blake Smith threw a hit less inning. The Quakes finish up the home stand with a three game series against the Lancaster JetHawks. Friday night is $1 Family Feast night with hot dogs, Pepsi products, and ice cream sandwiches all priced at, yup, you guessed it, $1. It's also faith night, with pre and post game performances by Mick Taras. Saturday night is fireworks night as well as hat giveaway (FIRST 1500 FANS). Sunday is photo giveaway day. Quakes Win 5th Straight Series

The Quakes played the Modesto Nuts for the final time in the 2013 season and ended up winning the series. So, not only did the Quakes take the series in Modesto, they took the season series as well, winning 4 of 6 games and losing only 2. The Quakes scored 20 runs on 31 hits, while the Nuts scored 14 runs on 28 hits.

Quakes Take 2 of 3 to Win 4th Straight Series

The Quakes and Ports faced off for the final time this season, with the Quakes walking away with the series win. The Ports, however, walked away with the season series record, winning 6 and losing 4. The Quakes are managing to get back on track from a rough start to the second half. After losing 7 straight to the start the 2nd half, they've managed to split a series with Lancaster, one of the most talented teams in the Cal League, and sweep Bakersfield, a team that gave the Quakes some trouble at the end of the 2012 season. Although the Quakes won the series, they were outhit 29-22, as well as out scored, 18-16. The Quakes did manage to pull off a natural home run cycle in a 14 inning marathon, also called game 1. Bobby Coyle started it off with a solo shot in the 2nd inning, while Noel Cuevas hit the two run in the 3rd. Pratt Maynard hit the 3 run in the 6th, followed by O'Koyea Dickson hitting the grand slam in the 14th, which would later prove to be the game winner.

Quakes Sweep the Blaze!

The Quakes and the Blaze faced off for the final time this year in a 3 game series at LoanMart Field in Rancho Cucamonga. The first and only time these two teams faced each other in Bakersfield, the 4 game series was split with each team winning two games. The first and only time they played in Rancho, this series, the Quakes swept the Blaze after scoring 14 runs and racking up 28 hits. The Blaze scored 8 runs on 19 hits.

The Quakes will be taking a 6 game road trip up north to Stockton (7/17-7/19) and Modesto (7/20-7/22). They will return home on the 23rd.

Quakes Win 2nd Series in a Row

After taking on the High Dessert Mavericks last weekend, and avoiding a sweep, the Quakes turned it around and took 2 of 3 this time as they did earlier this week against the 66ers. Both the Quakes and the Mavericks managed to score 12 runs, but the Quakes managed to outhit the Mavericks, 22-20.

Pitcher, Pedro Baez was promoted to Double A, Chattanooga. Recently acquired pitcher, Carlos Marmol was sent to the Quakes from the Isotopes, the Triple A affiliate. He is scheduled to remain with the Quakes for the rest of the home stand.

Quakes Take 2 of 3 Over 66ers

In the 6th series of the year between the Quakes and the 66ers, the Quakes really stepped up to the plate and made some magic. Before this series, the Quakes were either swept by the 66ers (twice) or lost the series by only winning 1 game. This time around, they would have none of that. They turned the tables and walked away with the series win. Even in the one game they lost, they showed they had some fight in them. They were down 8-2 in the top of the 9th, but would score 2 runs on 2 solo home runs to make the score 8-4, before accepting the loss. Overall, they racked up 15 runs, to Inland Empire's 11, and 27 hits, compared to the 66ers 31.

In game 2 of the series, Pedro Baez pitched 1 inning and allowed 1 hit.  Game 3 winner, Guastvo Gomez had a great start, shutting out the 66ers over 5.1 innings and allowing 4 hits. Matt Shelton came into the game and again helped preserve the shutout by going an inning and allowing a hit. Joel Lima pitched the final 2.2 innings and allowed only 1 hit to finalize the shutout. 

66ers's Pitching 

Ty Kelley pitched 2.1 innings while allowing 1 hit in game 1. Starter, Mark Sappington earned the game 2 win after going 8 innings and allowing 2 runs on 6 hits. Relief pitcher, Michael Johnson allowed 1 hit in 1 inning of work in game 3.

Roster Moves

Pitcher, Pedro Baez has been activated off of the disabled list. Pitcher, James Campbell, who was doing a rehab assignment with the AZL Dodgers, has been sent to the Great Lakes Loons. Outfielder, Devin Shines has been placed on the disabled list. Taking his place is Outfilder, Bobby Coyle who was just removed from the DL.

The Quakes will be starting a 6 game home stand at LoanMart Field on Wednesday against the High Desert Mavericks then the Bakersfield Blaze. Game time for Wednesday is 11:35 am as it's set for a kids summer camp day. Thursday is Thirsty Thursday, Friday is Andre Ethier bobble head giveaway [FIRST 1,500 fans,1 per person per ticket], Saturday is firework night, Sunday is a 5:05 game with kids running the bases after the game, as well as a photo giveaway, and  Monday is Social Media Monday.

Quakes Avoid Sweep in Adelanto

The Quakes and the Mavericks met up this weekend for the 3rd time this year, the second time in Adelanto. The Quakes took the loss in the first two games, but rallied back for the final game to avoid the sweep. The Mavericks park is a well known hitters park and that was made clear by the fact that both teams scored over 20 runs each, Quakes (25), Mavericks (24), as well as had over 25 hits each, Quakes (29), Mavericks (38). 

Rancho Cucamonga's Batting

Left fielder/center fielder, Noel Cuevas went 4-14 with 2 home runs. Right fielder, Scott Schebler went 9-14 with 2 doubles, a triple, and 2 home runs. Shortstop, Darnell Sweeney went 2-13 with 2 doubles. First baseman/designated hitter, O'Koyea Dickson went 4-12 with a double and a triple. Center fielder/second baseman/third baseman, Casio Grider went 6-11 with a double. Catcher/first baseman, Webster Rivas went 2-8 with a double and a home run.

Quakes's Pitching

Relief pitcher, Matt Shelton went 1.2 innings in game 1 and only allowed 1 hit. In game 2, outfielder turned pitcher, Blake Smith made his second appearance, going .1 innings and allowing 2 runs, neither of them earned, on 1 hit. Freddie Cabrera went 1.2 innings in game 2 and allowed 2 hits. Jarret Martin went an inning in game 2 and did not allow a hit or a run. Dodgers,s pitcher, Ted Lilly made his 5th rehab start of the year with the Quakes for game 3 and went 5.1 innings and allowed 6 runs on 9 hits. He had a rocky start, but struck out the final batter he faced for a total strikeout count of 7, earning him his first win a Quakes uniform this season. Dan Coulombe came in to relieve him and allowed 1 hit in 1.1 innings of work. Joel Lima earned the game 3 save after going 2.1 innings and allowing 2 hits.

Mavericks's Pitching 

Starter, Stephen Landazuri earned the game 1 win after going 6 innings and allowing 3 runs on 6 hits. Starter, Cam Hobson earned the game 2 win after going 6 innings and allowing 1 run on 4 hits. Relief pitcher, Dominic Leone threw 1.1 innings of 2 hit baseball in game 2. Jeremy Dobbs went 3 innings and allowed 2 unearned runs on 2 hits in game 3.

Roster Moves 

Outfielder, Bobby Coyle has been placed on the disabled list. Starting pitcher, Angel Sanchez has been traded to the Miami Marlins as well as former Quake, Steven Ames and former 66er, Josh Wall, for pitcher Ricky Nolasco.

Quakes win game 3

66ers Take 2 of 3 from Quakes

In the fifth meeting of the season between the 66ers and the Quakes, the 66ers again took ahold of the series reins and walked away with 2 wins of a possible 3. Inland Empire tallied up 25 hits, just one more than the Quakes. The 66ers also out scored the Quakes, 14-11. 

Inland Empire's Batting 

Right fielder/left fielder, Brennan Gowens went 2-13 with 2 doubles. Second baseman, Alex Yarbrough went 4-14 with 2 doubles. Catcher, Abel Baker went 4-12 with a home run. Center fielder, Andy Workman went 2-10 with a double and a home run. Designated hitter/right fielder, Gary Mitchell went 1-10 with a home run. Catcher, Zach Wright went 1-4 with a double. 

Rancho Cucamonga's Batting 

Dodger outfielder, Carl Crawford put up some good numbers in this series, going 3-10 with a double and at least one hit in each game he played in. Right fielder, Scott Schebler went 3-11 with a double and a home run. The home run tied a game, in the bottom of the 10th, which Rancho would go on to win. Shortstop, Darnell Sweeney went 5-13 with a double. Catcher, Pratt Maynard went 1-7 with a walk off single to win the game I mentioned earlier. Third baseman, Bladimir Franco went 4-11 with a double. Second baseman, Scott Wingo went 1-3 with a double. Center fielder, Noel Cuevas went 3-8 with a double and a home run.

Starter, Dan Reynolds got the game 1 win after allowing 2 runs on 6 hits over 6.1 innings. Carmine Giardina went 1.1 scoreless innings and allowed 2 hits in game 1. RJ Alvarez earned the game 2 save after going 1.1 innings and allowing 1 run on 1 hit. Eswarlin Jimenez and Ty Kelley both went 2 innings in game 2. Jimenez didn't allow a hit. Kelley allowed 1. Starter and game 3 winner, Mark Sappington went 6 innings and allowed 2 runs on 3 hits. Game 3 save credit goes to Eric Cendejas after going 2 innings and allowing 1 hit. 

Quakes's Pitching 

Former outfielder, Blake Smith made his pitching debut in game 1, throwing 1 inning of relief and allowing 2 hits. Freddie Cabrera threw 2 hitless innings in game 1 and Jarret Martin threw 1 hitless inning. Daniel Coulombe threw a total of 2 hitless innings between game 2 and game 3.
