Extra Innings with Lauren: Quakes Win Series, Matt Kemp Rehabs

In the final series of the regular season between the High Desert Mavericks and the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, the stakes were high and the stands were pretty packed. Well, they were on the final night of the series anyway, when Dodgers star outfielder, Matt Kemp made a rehab appearance for an injured ankle.

This series was a very important one for both teams as whichever team got the most wins would be the front runner of the race for the final wildcard spot. The Lancaster JetHawks clinched the 2nd half title and the 66ers clinched the first wildcard spot earlier this week. The 2nd wildcard spot is up for grabs for the 3 remaining Cal League South teams, the Storm, Mavericks, and Quakes. After winning 2 of 3 games over the Mavs, the Quakes have a half game lead in the wildcard race with 4 games to play.
The Quakes took this series, but the Mavericks took the season series, winning 12 while the Quakes won 11. In this series, the Mavericks outscored the Quakes 19-12, as well as outhit them, 30-22.

High Desert's Hitting

Center fielder, Jamal Austin went 3-13 with a double and a triple. Right fielder, Kevin Rivers went 4-13 with a double and 2 home runs. Designated hitter, Guillermo Pimentel went 5-9 with a double and a triple. First baseman, Jordy Lara went 3-13 with a home run. Left fielder, Jabari Henry went 4-11 with a double and a triple. Catcher, Michael Dowd went 2-7 with a double. Second baseman, Anthony Phillips went 4-7 with a double.

Rancho Cucamonga's Batting

Right fielder, Scott Schebler went 3-11 with 2 triples. Second baseman, Darnell Sweeney went 3-9 with a triple. First baseman/designated hitter, O'Koyea Dickson went 4-9 with a triple and a home run. Center fielder, Casio Grider went 2-8 with a double. Catcher, Chris O'Brien went 1-7 with a double. Third baseman/pinch hitter, Scott Wingo went 1-6 with a triple. First baseman, Chris Jacobs went 2-2 with a home run. Designated hitter, Matt Kemp went 0-5, but was making contact with the ball. That's a plus in my book.

Mavericks' Pitching

Relief pitcher, Blake Hauser threw 2 hitless innings in game 2. Game 3 winner, Stephen Landazuri allowed 3 runs on 6 hits over 5.2 innings. Grady Wood allowed 2 hits over 2.1 innings of work and Seon Gi Kim allowed 1 hit over 1 inning in game 3.

Quakes' Pitching

Game 1 starter, Lindsey Caughel allowed 5 runs, but only 1 earned, on 8 hits over 7 innings. Raydel Sanchez earned the game 1 win after allowing 3 hits over 2 innings. Game 3 winner, Gustavo Gomez allowed 1 hit over 5 strong innings. Eric Eadington allowed 3 hits over 1.2 innings in relief. Juan Noriega did not allow a hit over 1.1 innings of work and Craig Stem earned the save after throwing a hitless inning.

Roster Moves

Matt Kemp was added to the roster to complete a rehab assignment for an ankle injury.

The Quakes have a 4 game series against the Lancaster JetHawks, the final series of the regular season. Friday is Dollar Family Feast Night as well as a post game showing of The Sandlot.
